Who is Billy Vee?

Billy Vee Sound Systems was born in 1976 at the end of the long hot summer. The name, in case you are wondering, was taken from a truly awesome burgundy red Jaguar 5.3 litre Drophead V12 E type. Sadly the car was stolen in 1985 and the trail was followed to Sweden where it disappeared.

My name is Ian Anderson (No flute). I grew up in the glorious days of valve radiograms and Dansette record players where we just accepted that 'The message is more important than the medium' but as the years passed, trying to get the best from my domestic setup went from being a hobby to becoming a calling. I worked from home for two years building the capital and, as I wasn't rich, I had to carefully select the products I sold. I operated from my living room and 30 years later not much has changed - because people still live that way, except - we now have two listening rooms laid out as domestic style living rooms above a shop reception and display area .

The shop opened in December 1976 - no mission statements - just three keywords: Performance, reliability and affordability. Performance related directly to the products sonic abilities, not paper specifications, we had learned very early on to distrust these along with press reviews and suppliers claims with a passion. During the early eighties we moved to the present shop and now in the politically correct new millenium I suppose we could replace the word affordability with value for money and add an important factor for today's music enthusiast - Upgradeability. Add to rather than throw away - and we arrive at the building block approach. Another important advance in musical satisfaction - long term value.

Most people can identify a good sound when they hear it. They do not need to be an expert, better if they are not. Upon focusing on the music anybody can easily determine the differences that make a good or bad system. As one of our customers, a concise analysis of what you like and how you live your life will reveal a short list of products that may need deeper evaluation by comparing in the listening room. O.K.- are you ready for the big sales pitch? Reading reviews, talking to friends or even us are all good pointers but it's loads easier with our secret ingredient.

Most people who want to improve their system or buy a new one already have a substantial record/CD collection and all our top systems or add-ons have this one vital secret yet active ingredient. We guarantee you will hear 'things' in your music that you did not know were there before. Instruments, vocals, even melodies. A completely re-vitalized collection, every record you own, every CD, Album or radio broadcast you listen to. Interested? I was, that's why I started Billy Vee, but you don't have to give up your day job, to find out more contact us or, if you can, visit Billy Vee direct and hear how much more your music has to offer.

Billy Vee & BADA

Ian Anderson, founder of Billy Vee, was chairman of the British Audio-Visual Dealers Association from 2004 to 2008.
Ian's passion has always been excellent performance, in cars, Hi Fi and his shop. He used all his accumulated experience working with key BADA members to develop the training and education resources of the association.  Along with some key board and associate members Ian was the main architect behind the BADA skills development program bringing a raft of new customer and dealer benefits. He gained the Hi-Fi News retailer of the year award in 2004 and outstanding contribution to the industry award from the main Trade journal Inside Hi Fi in 2007.  The multi award winning Demcraft training program and other dealer training programs continued to offer an unparalleled introduction to the disciplines of best retailing practise for the demonstration and installation of audio visual equipment in the U.K.
Ian continued to be an active and committed member of the BADA board. Chaired by Simon Byles with Phil Hansen the Executive Officer, the new BADA direction continued to offer a greater degree of quality assurance and increased standards to BADA customers. BADA changed its identity to The Clarity Alliance in 2012. For more details about the benefits of using a Clarity dealer, visit

In February 2020, The Clarity Alliance honoured Ian during the eighth annual “Best of Show” awards at The Bristol Hi fi Show, bestowing its Honorary Fellowship award on him.  Clarity, in its own words "undertakes to recognise individuals who have made a significant contribution to the Hi fi industry" through this award .  Presenting the award, Clarity’s chairman, Tom Barron, said, “Ian is one of hi-fi’s great characters. He has worked tirelessly to build Billy Vee Sound Systems into a very well-regarded retailer, and he found time to be a very active chairman of BADA, the British Audio Dealers Association, laying much of the groundwork for the creation of its successor association, Clarity. His huge contribution to the British hi-fi industry makes him a very worthy recipient of the Clarity Honorary Fellowship.”

Our Services

Audition your choices

We have two comfortable domestic listening rooms where you can listen to any of our audio or home cinema components or systems. Here you can freely discuss your aspirations, audition your choices and listen without external distractions in a friendly relaxed environment. The best way to compare performance or set out building your dream system by discovering which equipment meets your specific needs.

You are most welcome to take advantage of our listening rooms any time you may visit if a room is available but as this service is popular we would recommend you contact us to reserve a time slot which will also give us the opportunity to set up your choice of equipment ready for your visit. Although we have a huge collection of both classical and popular music to choose from why not bring some of your own music or movies to give you that basic comparison.

Part Exchange

We offer a part exchange service so as you can use the value of your old system against your new purchase. We will part exchange items that are made by a manufacturer we represent and that are of a merchantable quality

Setup & Installation

We offer a free of charge installation service on any system we sell. This service will ensure you gain maximum performance and pleasure from your purchase. We can install at times convenient to you either as a single installation or if more rooms or equipment types are included, in stages starting with your main system then adding other locations when you are ready. If you are refurbishing your home we are happy to plan and work with your builders to simplify the process.

After Sales

We are committed to providing you with performance and value over time, with a system that can be updated, extended or upgraded. Once your system is commissioned and working to your satisfaction you will naturally want to ensure it stays that way. We provide lifetime product and  technical support, this includes a call out service on systems weve installed and a personal contact who in most cases is the man who has taken care of you from the beginning, so you will know him and he will know your system

Servicing

We are able to offer servicing and repairs on equipment made by manufacturers we represent. If you have a component that appears to be  faulty or just doesn't act like it should, just drop it in and we will take care of the rest. Just give us a call or pop in for a consultation.

If you are one of the many Linn LP12 owners who still treasure your record collection, you would be surprised just how much better a regularly serviced turntable can sound. We will happily give your LP12 a thorough health check and service, taking a look at all moving parts and electronics and adjusting or replacing them to meet our high performance standards. The LP12 can also be improved with a number of modular upgrades, taking your pretty good turntable and turning it into a 'wow, that really is great' listening experience. You can also arrange a one on one consultation with Ian Ridge, to see how we can make a difference to your deck.

Finance Options

We have various ways you can finance your desired product or dream system. The one thing they have in common is that all are ‘no interest’ bearing loans unless you want them to be – meaning the deferred period is extended to 4 years to spread the cost with interest added. As a convenient way to purchase the item or system you really want they are brilliant and we have no interest in charging you to get the best.

Deferred Credit - or Buy-now-pay-later scheme which offers three fixed terms of 6, 9 or 12 month periods. This scheme gains its popularity via its flexibility, no deposit, and payback methods. If you pay the balance within the agreed period the only cost to you is the set up fee. Please call or email for further details.

Interest Free Credit - or 0% APR has also been a popular choice since its introduction in 1982 and the attraction of this scheme is the fixed monthly payments which we offer over a 12 or 18 month period. This scheme requires a minimum 30% deposit and is only offered on purchases over £1500 to shop visitors.

Any finance offered is subject to the terms and conditions of Novuna Finance for whom we act as credit brokers.

We are also proud to work in association with the Metropolitan Police Trading Service
